I’m On Strike And Maybe You Should Be Too
You’re getting Noth Things a day early because tomorrow—January 30, 2026—I am joining the National General Strike. No work. No school. No shopping. Small sacrifices compared to what my friends in Minneapolis are enduring every day.
I’m also canceling all my streaming services, including Amazon Prime. They say it’s symbolic and that you can always resubscribe later. But personally, I’m looking forward to finding out how many of my big-tech addictions I can permanently live without
.
Whatever techno-optimism I once had is long gone. I’m watching corporations that once wrapped themselves in idealism openly collude with a corrupt, brutal, totalitarian regime to destroy our privacy…
…erode public institutions and public trust…
…and use our own tax dollars to put targets on our backs
Minneapolis is showing us the way. We need to fight this ourselves—through individual and community action—not just hope our institutions or politicians will save us. When it comes to this administration, I only have one hope left.
Our first contender, which I feel speaks to the moment, is called Inmates.
For the challenger, I’ve chosen something you can tell your boss tomorrow to explain why you’re not at work. It’s called Good Excuse.
We’ll be back next week with the semifinals. Thank you for being a subscriber!

Brilliant timing with this. The stream cancellation angle is pretty genius becasue it puts skin in the game beyond just posting online about resistance. I've been trying the 'month off big tech' thing periodically and alwayssuprised by how fast habits change. Feels way more real than symbolic at this point tho.
